Oral Language Development Through Technology: Simple, Effective Skills

Technology provides some superb opportunities for engaging students in oral language development in meanginful ways .

 

 

At the end of this course you will be able to use a variety of technologies to develop oral langauge in the classroom.  See modules below for an overview of skills development. 

 

Technology required:

Participants will need to have access to a smart phone, laptop or tablet.   Options for submitting your course work are as flexible as creating a presentation about the content – lack of access to specific technology at home isn’t, and shouldn’t, be a barrier to accessing training.

Module 1

  1. Familiarisation with the VLE and course structure
  2. What is 21st century learning?
  3. Introduction to online and iPad-based oral language tools
  4. Introduction to the cloud
  5. Create a basic eBook

 

Module 2

  1. Collaborative planning
  2. Storyboarding and discussion
  3. Introduction to photography
  4. Introduction to video recording

 

Module 3

  1. Building an eBook
  2. Recording voice
  3. Creating hidden audio files (interactive images)
  4. Building audio based animation for images and avatars
  5. Complete eBook

 

Module 4

  1. Storyboarding a movie
  2. Sourcing images for a movie
  3. Scriptwriting
  4. Recording video
  5. Recording narration
  6. Complete movie

 

Module 5

  1. Introduction to frame-by-frame animation
  2. Introduction to digitally-drawn animation
  3. Writing and recording scripts for animated movies
  4. Placing animations in eBooks and movies to support oral language development

 

Course Duration

Approximately 20 hours

 

Assessment

Each module includes hands-on activities providing participants with fun opportunities to practise the basic skills.  These activities will be shared with the course e-tutor as a key part of your assessment.

Participants will keep a reflective journal and engage in a discussion forum with peers and their e-tutor.  They will use the notes from the journal and their discussions to evaluate their school’s use of digital technologies and create some basic plans for where the skills learned during this course will be implemented in the school in the coming school year.
